Cozy Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies

Is it possible to have two favorite recipes for the same thing? If you’d asked me that a month ago, I’d have said, “uh……no.” (And then thought to myself, “man, what kind of question was that?!”) I mean, aren’t we all perpetually searching for THE best recipe for this or that; the one that blows all the others out of the water — hands down, no contest? And yet, I am here now to tell you that it IS, in fact, possible. One cookie. Two recipes.

By now, many of you have probably seen/tried the New York Times Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, heralded by many to be THE very best. (See also this, this, and this.) And I am in full agreement. That’s a damn fine cookie. I accidentally passed the obsession on to my mother as well, when I left several behind after house sitting their place. But then this cookie came along. And let me tell you, I’m smitten.

Weekly Rewind: Gift Ideas {Potables}

Is it too early to start talking about this? I mean, it feels too early to be rushing out and buying things (I’m not a Black Friday person……and don’t even get me started on Grey Thursday), but typically, I’m a notorious procrastinator. I wait until the last minute to buy gifts, to the point where I usually wind up having online purchases shipped directly to my parents’ house. So brainstorming around this time is always a good thing, especially for those of us who just wake up one morning and say, “Holy $#*%, it’s December 20th?! What have I been doing?!”

This is my drink-themed gift run down, which should hopefully be followed by an “{edibles}” version. (I say “hopefully” because I find it a lot easier to zero in on neat drink gifts than food ones, but maybe I just need to do a little more digging.) Also, I promise this post will be followed shortly by an actual recipe. (The above picture is proof that I did actually make something that wasn’t a turkey or 5 lbs of potatoes somewhat recently. They were cookies, and they were awesome.)

Weekly Rewind: Thanksgiving Edition

Hey everyone! I don’t know about you, but I’m already wound up and ready for the onslaught of Thanksgiving feast, so I’ll make this intro short and sweet. If you’re like me, you probably have a million lists and diagrams and other helpful things to do to calm you down before Thursday. (It’s not because we’re insane, it’s because we’re organized.)

I’ve hosted Thanksgiving in my modest little apartment for the past three years. The kitchen is awkwardly shaped and sized, and allows no place for a dining room table (and neither does any room in the rest of the house). So the kitchen counter turns into a bit of a buffet, and then we all pull up chairs in the living room and eat from plates in our laps. It’s pretty funny, but no one seems to mind (not even my parents). At this point, I have the whole day down to a haphazard science, with a few star dishes. To stave off my mid-day psychotic meltdown, my mother prepares some appetizers at home, and J makes stuffing and eggplant parm (the main dish for my vegetarian parents) at his place. But of course, there are many dishes bouncing around on the Internet that have caught my eye and made me think, “hmmmm, maybe I’ll shake things up a bit this year……or next year!”

Savory Kale, Garlic, & Cauliflower Purée Pop Tarts

A few things occur to me as I begin to write this post. One, this main photo looks an awful lot like the monster cookie stack picture from two posts ago — derp. Two, these pop tarts, while very deserving of being shared ASAP to avoid depriving the world of the recipe a moment longer, have nothing to do with Thanksgiving. Three, just over a week ago I began a weekly rewind series with a mission to begin posting more frequently than once a week. And here I am with a new post……one whole week later. (My focus was derailed mid-week by circumstances beyond my control. But I’m back on track, and I’m ready to make up for lost time by cramming in two posts, back-to-back. So today, we talk pop tarts. Then tomorrow, a slightly belated weekly rewind in the form of a Thanksgiving round-up!)

Introducing: The Weekly Rewind

Hey guys! Today, I’m trying out something new. Here goes…

If I could pick one thing to improve upon when it comes to this site (let’s pretend for a second that all of those sidebar buttons actually go to real, helpful places with actual information……ugh, the casualties of site redesign), it would be the frequency of my posts. I usually manage one per week, but even that can be a bit of a challenge — especially on the days when my 40+ hr/week book-making job leaves me feeling like the only way to alleviate my stress and annoyance would be to tear all of the books I’ve worked on from my shelves, throw them on top of a pile of manuscripts in the middle of my floor, then set the whole thing ablaze and bask in the warm, soothing glow until there’s nothing left but embers and ash.
