Blue Bottle Double-Chocolate Cookies

So back in December, I talked about how I made two different batches of cookies from The Blue Bottle Craft of Coffee, because I could not choose one over the other. These, at last, are those other cookies. The holidays came and went before I knew it, and I realized it might be best to hold onto this post until late January, when healthy resolutions become a little more “flexible” and thoughts start to turn to the chocolatey decadence of Valentine’s Day.

And these cookies are deliciously decadent. The raw batter is ahh-may-ziing [say it in a sing-song voice]. The one place I went wrong was when I decided to make these normal size cookies, rather than following the instructions to make them semi-ginormous. Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking when I did that. (Actually, I was probably saying to myself, “If I make these normal size, then I can eat four at a time and it’ll be ok!”) But as a person who loves those dinner plate–sized cookies that actually taste more like one giant brownie, I should know better.

Cozy Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies

Is it possible to have two favorite recipes for the same thing? If you’d asked me that a month ago, I’d have said, “uh……no.” (And then thought to myself, “man, what kind of question was that?!”) I mean, aren’t we all perpetually searching for THE best recipe for this or that; the one that blows all the others out of the water — hands down, no contest? And yet, I am here now to tell you that it IS, in fact, possible. One cookie. Two recipes.

By now, many of you have probably seen/tried the New York Times Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, heralded by many to be THE very best. (See also this, this, and this.) And I am in full agreement. That’s a damn fine cookie. I accidentally passed the obsession on to my mother as well, when I left several behind after house sitting their place. But then this cookie came along. And let me tell you, I’m smitten.

Monster Cookies,
Halloween Candy-Style

One of my goals in life is to be known by the children in my neighborhood (if/when I actually settle down into a neighborhood) as the woman that gives out THE BEST Halloween candy. (Also on the Life Goals list: Befriending an owl and buying an entire wheel of cheese. But I digress.) I and my house will probably seem a little creepy — mostly by nature, and perhaps emphasized by a little effort. There will likely be cats milling around my feet when I answer the door. But those who are brave enough to see past all this will be handsomely rewarded. To avoid silently judging the parenting skills of those whose children grab more than their share of candy or elbow fellow trick-or-treaters out of the way to get first pick, I will package up my candy selections up into little treat bags and distribute them accordingly. When it’s time to do candy inventory later in the evening, kids will get to my treat bag and think, “hmmm……I wonder what kind of candy the creepy cat lady put in here.” And they will be amazed at what they find. Twix. Milky Ways. Nerds. Butterfingers. Three Musketeers. No Necco Wafers. None of those BS orange- and black-wrapped peanut-taffy goo candies. 100% top shelf candy.

Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins,
Filled with Nutella

Yup. I warned you these were coming! As if pumpkin doughnut muffins weren’t tasty enough on their own, I needed to fill them with nutella. Sometimes cramming as much delicious as possible into one treat just seems like the right thing to do.

This decision, quite frankly, was for my own good. Apparently I have this problem with nutella where, uh, I can’t stop eating it. I don’t even want to tell you how much had disappeared by the end of this photo shoot. “Oh look, there’s some excess nutella on this plate, might as well clean it up with my fingers.” “And oh no, now this knife is covered in it too. I certainly wouldn’t want to waste it by washing it down the sink!” “Oh and of course I will eat this bread covered in nutella.” That went on for 20 minutes. I spent the next half an hour cursing my lack of will power and the serious serious stomach ache it had caused, while slowly sinking out of my chair, onto the floor. At that moment, I never wanted to see nutella again. I even managed to climb back up into my chair to put out a call to local facebook friends to please PLEASE take some off my hands. But the nausea soon subsided, and the nutella cravings returned.

Homemade Nutella

I am kind of freaking out at the moment. In a good way. Freaking out because I have a ton of posts lined up, and I want to show them all to you NOW. I sat at my computer this morning, downing coffee and staring at all of my unpublished image folders, contemplating which one to choose. Should I sneak some syrup from one of the three shrubs that are steeping in my pantry at the moment, and photograph it before the season has passed for its star fruit? Or should I snap some pictures of the recently bottled homemade version of everyone’s favorite spicy sauce? They were all so tempting, but this nutella won out in the end. And that’s because there’s a follow-up post. One that involves nutella contained within something. And pumpkin. And maybe also the words “doughnut” and “muffin.” OH YES. Pumpkin fever is upon us, and I’m ready to embrace the madness. So please, join me — let’s loosen our belts, hide our scales, and ready…set…TREATS!
