Wow, just finished my first year teaching high school cooking. Now off for the summer 2 days and found these cookies. Sitting here surfing, for school… can’t get off the treadmill, I am going to bake them for my three boys who are off for the first swim meet of the summer with my hubby :). I am so loving your pictures :) I would love to try your recipes and use them next year :)

Carey, I have been drooling over your recipes and look forward to trying some. The sweet potato pancakes look especially good. Great website. Great look. Fun comments and terrific pictures. Thanks for giving me some good ideas.

Hello! I just stumbled upon your blog and am so excited to try many of your recipes. I’d like to keep up with your posts; do you have an RSS feed? I subscribe to lots of food blogs through Google Reader and would love to add you to my list. Thanks so much!

Do you have any suggestions for getting an onion smell out of a wood cutting board? I’ve tried lemon & salt, boiling hot water, vinager, lime juicem, cinnamon. Nothing seems to get that smell out! I’m about to try a tiny bit of bleach but I’m uncomfortablt with that.

    • carey says:

Oh boy! I know what you mean about that smell. In the few times I have cut up onions, I’ve regretted my decision to use a nice cutting board because the smell just does not want to go away. I’ve wound up just scrubbing the bejesus out of the board several times under very hot water, over the course of a week or so. (I have a ridiculous assortment of cutting boards, so having one out of commission isn’t too big of a deal.) You could also try rubbing baking soda into the board, letting it sit for five minutes or so, then wiping it clean with a damp rag. I’d probably also avoid using bleach if possible. The internet seems to think it’s fine, but the chemicals weird me out too. Good luck, Scot!

    Carey,
So I just LOVE your blog and was wondering how you became familiar/started this whole wonderful blog process!!! Everything about your blog, from the pictures to the attractive layout of the webpage, is top-notch. Any tips/advice you have to impart to the less technologically-inclined counterpart of society? :-)

    • carey says:

Thank you so much, Mary! As far as the whole set up goes, I am very lucky to have a friend who is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to web stuff. He set me up with the domain name and the wordpress account, and then I kind of took it from there. I seem to have a knack for web code, so I took a standard wordpress theme and modified it to the point of being unrecognizable. (I realize this isn’t very helpful, though, since what I’m really saying is that I just happened to luck out in the smart friend and basic web skills departments!) But that’s not to say that getting started with something like this is difficult. There are tons of domain name registration sites, and wordpress makes it very easy to set things up from there. There are tons of free templates out there with plenty of customization options, and there are also some very nice ones to be purchased, if you don’t mind spending a little cash. From that point, you can pretty much manage everything behind the scenes in your wordpress account, which is very user-friendly.

Oh, and as far as photography goes, I am pretty much 100% self-taught. A photographer friend of mine explained the basics to me about shooting in manual, and then I bought a camera and just kind of learned from there. For me, photography was one of those things that just sort of seemed to click one day (and that day was not all that long ago!). I read and read and read about various functions and techniques and light metering and so on, and it still kind of felt like I was just snapping pictures and hoping for one good one in the batch, or relying on post-processing to make things look acceptable. And then around three months ago, I finally started to really feel like I actually understood my camera. You can get a pretty decent basic dlsr nowadays for a couple hundred dollars. I use fancy programs for photoediting just because I happen to have them for work, but Picasa is a great, free image editor and photo organizer that can do wonderful things.

I hope some of this is useful! If you happen to have any more questions, I’d be more than happy to help. :)

LOVE LOVE LOVE your site. The food is beautiful and looks delicious. I have already pinned a bunch of recipes to try. Also, I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate that your site is not littered with ads. :)

  10. Mimi says:

I’ve been trying to follow your blog but it’s not accepting my email? Any ideas?

    • carey says:

Hi Mimi! I just checked my subscribe list and it looks like you’re already signed up and confirmed. It’s possible that my post notifications are being caught by your spam filter. (I know some of the emails from the blogs I subscribe to occasionally wind up there.) I’d check the spam folder, then see if there’s some way you can mark the address as not spam, so your email client won’t continue to filter them out in the future. Hope this helps — good luck!

    Hi.

In “Browse” section the four buttons does not have any actual links to the website parts, it’s just links to the pictures used for buttons. :)

    • carey says:

      *sigh* Yup, I know. :)

I did a site redesign a little while ago, and I’m still working on updating all of the functionality. (It’s getting to the point where I can’t say that I “recently” did a redesign, so I think the only excuse I’m left with it laziness.) Thank you for pointing it out though, Augustus. I need motivation!

  12. Kate says:

Just discovered your blog and love it! Noticed though that browsing is difficult – on the browse page, the buttons season/ingredient, etc., are all redirecting to the jpeg. Maybe the hyperlink is broken on the images? thanks!

  13. Kate says:

oh man, totally didn’t see you already responded to the comment above. never mind1

    • carey says:

Hehe, I should keep in mind that there’s a clear timeline here outlining my continued laziness/helplessness! :) Thank you for bringing it up, Kate. I really need to get that sorted out, and knowing the people are actually trying to use it to no avail is the best motivation.

  14. Hi Carey,

I’d love to use your photo of sriracha-coconut-popcorn-with-smoked-sea-salt for a photo gallery I am posting tomorrow on 2013 health trends on JoyBauer.com. It would be in exchange for a hotlink credit. Let me know as soon as you can. Thanks!

Just wanted to let you know the BROWSE and ELSEWHERE section don’t work at all for me. NOt sure if it’s just on my browser or overall. I’m on a MAC with Safari 6.0.2

    • carey says:

Oy, it’s my laziness, not your browser that’s the problem…… I’ve been very bad about fixing those since I did a blog redesign (which happened quite a while ago at this point). BUT you have shamed me into doing some work to the “elsewhere” section this morning! Thank you for the motivation, Katherine! :)

    So, hi!

I am the one who commented on the beet & brussel sprouts breakfast wraps. I was wondering if you could direct me to some tried-and-true gluten free breakfast recipes? My good friend is on some diet (don’t know the specifics) her doctor put her on because she has been having gastro issues, and I know she WAS doing the gluten-free thing, so I think maybe that’s a safe bet. I’m seeing her this weekend, and making breakfast for her husband and mine, and she said she would just make herself something. I don’t want her to feel left out, so I want to make something that all 4 of us will enjoy, while still being considerate of her needs. I do know yesterday she made a key lime & avocado pie with (i assume) sugar-free meringue topping (it was thick and liquidy, because she said it doesn’t have sugar to bind it together). It was on a crust, but I don’t know what the crust was made out of. I could forgo pastries entirely if you could help me think of something! Thanks as always, Carey!!

    • carey says:

Hi Laura! I’ve definitely got a few suggestions. :) It’s awesome that there are so many amazing gluten-free food blogs and recipes bouncing around the internet these days. The four sites I’d recommend checking out (for breakfast or gluten-free foods in general) are:

Roost. Everything on Caitlin’s site is gluten-free (as well as free of refined sugars and processed ingredients). And it’s gorgeous.
Gluten-Free Girl. Also all gluten-/refined sugar-/processed ingredient-free. Lots and lots of recipes.
Green Kitchen Stories. I’m not positive if everything here is gluten-free, but most (if not all) of it is.
My New Roots. Not everything on Sarah’s site is gluten-free, but a number of things are.

Hope this helps! Since I haven’t tried my hand at gluten-free breakfast myself, I figured it would be best to give you links to recipe lists instead, so you have some options to choose from. It seems like there are lots of good options out there that should be pretty easy (and tasty) for all four of you. :)

I’m stuck behind a desk for the moment answering phones and found your blog. It’s making the morning fly by! I love it! So much fun to read, beautiful to look at, and inspiring! I’m making mental lists of what to cook when I get home. Thanks

Thank you so much, Chelle! I’m so glad I could help alleviate the monotony of being stuck behind a desk. I definitely know how that goes. :)

I read your recipe for home made tonic. I will try it for this summer season. The unit (cup) used: Is it US or U.K. units (quite a difference)?
